About Tsunami Detection
What triggers a warning?
Tsunami warnings are typically issued when an earthquake meets specific criteria: magnitude ≥ 7.0, shallow depth (under 100 km), and location beneath or near the ocean floor. The USGS sets a tsunami:1 flag in their feed when these conditions are met.
DART Buoy Network
NOAA operates a network of Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoys that detect pressure changes from passing tsunamis and transmit data in real time to confirm wave generation.
International Coordination
The IOC/UNESCO coordinates four regional tsunami warning systems: the Pacific (PTWS), Indian Ocean (IOTWS), Caribbean (CARIBE-EWS), and North-East Atlantic & Mediterranean (NEAMTWS), covering all major ocean basins.
